Northeast Campus Heritage Room

The Heritage Room, located on the lower level of the Northeast Campus Learning Resources Center, is a unique collection of local history and genealogical materials. Tarrant County College Northeast Campus is one of a few two-year colleges in the state to have a local history collection such as this one.

History of the Heritage Room

In 1973, the Mid-Cities Historical Society members disbanded. They had a scrapbook and other materials that they wished to deposit where it would serve the most people. Since Tarrant County College is a community institution, three former members: Thelma Ray, Jeanette Tingle and Weldon Cannon, approached Dr. Don Anthony with the idea of establishing a center on the Northeast Campus for the collection and preservation of the local heritage. Dr. Anthony asked Basil Hoyl, Dr. Herman Crow, Dr. Delbert Derrett and Tommy Ozburn to meet with these three people. They all agreed that it was a good idea and that the Learning Resources Center was the proper place for such a center, but space for the project was not available at that time. Dr. Anthony promised that when the LRC was renovated, space would be allotted for this project. In 1975, the Hurst Bicentennial Heritage Committee was formed with Frank Healer as chairman. Jeanette Tingle and Tommy Ozburn were members and they insisted that the development of this heritage center be one of the committee's projects. When Mr. Healer resigned from the committee, Duane Gage was appointed chairman and he enthusiastically pushed the project and was personally instrumental in soliciting a tremendous amount of materials.

Scope and Purpose of the Collection

The room's emphasis is primarily on the collection, organization, and preservation of materials pertaining to the northeast quadrant of Tarrant County. These materials make up the core of the collection. However, books and other items related to the historical and cultural heritage of Fort Worth, Tarrant County, and Texas are also housed here. The collection includes a photograph archive, family histories, early census indices for many states, early census records of various Texas counties for selected years, early city directories, and local history reference books. These materials are available to students, faculty, and community members. The Heritage Room has a collection of approximately 7,000 catalogued materials including maps, censuses, books, photographs, microforms, and a general collection including manuscripts, pamphlets, artifacts, books, etc.
